BLC Meeting Minutes - 1/13/07

The meeting was called to order at 11:40pm by President Bryan.

Bryan opened the floor to any volunteers to fill officer positions. The responsibilities of treasurer has been passed to Jesse Leonardi. Anna Akepyan, Amir Turulja, Karl Erdmenn, Dong Hyak and Derek Zhao expressed interest in filling officer positions.

Advisor Leslie Lum informed the quorum of Jan 19th's Financial Future Education project. The BLC is required to post posters around campus and act as aids to this event. The BLC Kick Off Party will be in conjunction with this event as the BLC will be a booth among other visitor booths in room C-120 A and B, 10:30am to 1pm. BLC's sister chapter at North Seattle Community College, the BLT (Business Leadership Team) has been invited to take part in this event.

Guest Jacob Peltier, BLC's ASG representative presented to the BLC, Entrepreneurship Week held on February 24th through March 3rd. This is a national program hosted by BCC. The BLC's responsibility in this is to prepare a sub program: venture capitalism and Peace Tree - Veterans of Vietnam who work on economic restructuring of post war Vietnam. Entrepreneurship Week is held in conjunction with Internship Week. BLC will participate in the Fashion Show.

The International Mixer has been moved to Feb 2nd.

Beth Apple stopped by to inform BLC of Internship Week.

Faisal Jaswal stopped in to see what's up.

I. Unitus Fund Raiser

a) Judith suggested change the Fund Raiser kick off party time to 1:30pm~2:30pm, so we decided the kick off party will begin from 12:30pm to 2:30pm, in room C-120A+B.

b) Judith and Sun Dan will work on the Fund Raiser party poster on Tuesday, Oct 10.

c) Bryan will print the Fund Raiser party poster by Wednesday, Oct 11.

d) Sun Dan will have the Fund Raiser speaker list printed out on Tuesday, Oct 10.

e) We decided the Fund Raiser speakers’ speech time and the Raffle Tickets selling time from 10:00am~1:00pm on each day from Tuesday, Oct 17~ Friday, Oct 20.

f) Sun Dan will design a huge poster for BLC Ads and Raffle Ticket selling before the next week event.

g) We decide part of our BLC member tickets selling time list:

i. Bryan will help sell tickets on Tuesday, Oct 17. 9:30am~12:00pm.

ii. Jesse will help sell tickets on Wednesday, Oct 18. 9:00am~12:00pm

iii. Drew will help sell tickets on Thursday, Oct 19. 10:30am~1:00pm

h) Drew will prepare the Raffle tickets selling instructions and bring them on the next meeting.

i) Drew will prepare another sheet recording the names of only donation people.

j) Next week, all BLC members will announce to each of their class for the Raffle Ticket selling.

II. Connect to Your Future Conference

a) We will have a meeting on Monday, Nov 6. and we will have our prepare training for the conference.

ALUMNI NIGHT 2006!

Those of you who have ever attended a BLC-coordinated event know that we can put on a good party! This year's second annual Alumni Night was no different. We had lots of delicious food and a great turnout of over 60 people! Students had a chance to find out about the workload of a four year university as compared to BCC, learned about our alumnis' success stories with BCC at the origin, and were able to network with our alumni who currently work for WDS Global, Protoviti, Moss Adams, Ford Motor Company, Puget Sound Energy, Skyline Properties, Boeing Capital, the Aguiar Group, and AXA.

Did you know that Costco's shrinkage is ONLY .02%, while the industry's average is roughly 3-5%?

(Shrinkage: Merchandise/inventory lost due to damage or theft)

BCC students were given the special opportunity to attend a personal tour of the Issaquah Costco warehouse. The site manager, Mark Sjobien, guided our group through the different areas/departments of the warehouse, explained the reasoning behind product placement, and emphasized the importance of efficiency. With the above statistic, as well as many other interesting facts about costco operations, our group gained a better understanding of what it takes to make any business truely successful.

best-sellers, are placed in this area to grab the shoppers' attention,

Below: Towards the back of the warehouse is the wine section. Costco offers

great prices for popular everyday wines, but also provides upscale selections as well.

Costco has been a very successful local seller of wine.

Following the tour, we headed towards the coporate headquarters (adjacent to the warehouse) to attend a panel discussion. Some of Costco's top managers shared their personal experiences with the business, their duties at Costco on a day to day basis, and why it's important to work well with others. Many of the speakers had been working for Costco for 10-20 years, and it was apparent that they were passionate about their jobs!

The Costco tour/discussion panel was a value experience to any aspiring business student. If you were not able to attend this year's visit, check back with BLC next year to find out if there will be another Costco opportunity... or consider joining the BLC to learn about our other upcoming events.

Over 70 students attended our International Mixer!

American and International students joined Business Leadership Club last Friday, February 17th, for coffee, breakfast, and fun activities. In an effort to learn more about differing cultures, American students attempted to explain the meaning of commonly-used slang words, and International students shared their stories about education, family, and college life in their native cultures.

1) Model Show
Date: Tuesday, February 7, 2006
Time: 12:30pm to 1:00pm
- Model Volunteers
i. Bryan Imanishi, Prew Pussault, Tom Harringtan, Chris Jones, Fady Nasiem and Winoten Choe
ii. Each model has to bring two outfits, one good and one bad
Good Outfit: pretty formal, interview clothes
Bad Outfit: can be funny
Aim: to show students what is appropriate to wear
iii. Each model has to walk out twice
iv. 2 models (one wears good outfit and the other wears bad outfit) walk out at the same time
v. On February 7, model volunteers have to arrive earlier (at about noon)

Business Leadership Party

Today, the BLC hosted a end of the year party to its members and to our outgoing President and future Seattle UW student Mark Hiester. Congratulations Mark on being such a great President, student, and being accepted to the UW Seattle Business Department.

Furthermore, Professors Paquette and Lum, staff advisors of our club, presented Mark Hiester, Rae Kang, and Michael Wang Certificates of Recognition. From all of us, we give our sincerest and utmost thanks to our advisors, the members of BLC, and to the students of BCC for making our club possible.

Starting in September 2005, the BLC will be changing. New faces and old faces will be back for our second year! There will be a new administration and club members. Kai Chung spoke to BCC students about his position at Microsoft. In business development he creates partnerships and alliances with many of the rivals that compete against Microsoft such as SunMicro Systems, IBM, and Oracle. Kai spoke to students with an extended Q&A session where the floor was opened to all students who asked questions pertaining to his job, what Microsoft does as a company (7P/L's), and the things you need to know in order to try and get your foot in the door at Microsoft. Starbucks comes to BCC

On Wednesday 4/13 @ 8:30am, Vivien Chung who is the Director of Strategy at Starbucks came to BCC to talk about her position. Vivien obtained her B.A. at Cambridge University in London and her M.B.A. at the prestigious Harvard Business School.

At Starbucks, Vivien works on store development and planning networks. When you open a store, you have to consider its location, size, neighboring stores. In the U.S., Starbucks opened 500 new stores in 2004!! Vivien who was involved in this process said that in the U.S. "our stores are based on a clean model."

When Vivien moved to the International division of Stategy Director, it was her responsibility to open Starbuck in foreign countries. Starbucks opens their international stores using the "replication model." There are stores in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United Kingdom.

You may ask why Starbucks is not in every state in the U.S. or has an even greater international presence. Well Vivien responds with "The engine is holding us back. We need trained people in our new stores. How fast can we grow without breaking the engine of Starbucks in expanding."

Another one of Vivien's responsibilities is to look for new markets abroad for Starbucks to enter. "Who are our customers? What are their tastes and preferences." In many of the international Starbucks, and especially in China, Vivien says that their customers want to "go to [Starbucks] to see and be seen!"

Starbucks is an international icon that is building to expand and grow. It has consistently been the industry leader in coffee by growing at the rate of 20% per year! Both full time and part time employees are elgible for medical benefits. Howard Shultz, previous CEO of Starbucks, believed that his employees should be treated well.

'Spring' into BLC on Mondays

This Monday (4/11) @ 3pm, was the kickoff meeting for BLC. With tons of pizza and new ideas the club got down to 'Business' :) very quickly. This quarter, we plan to feature several events, such as: Real Estate, Accounting Panel/Job Shadow, and Microsoft.

As usual, the meetings will be held on every other Monday @ 3p.m. This means that the NEXT meeting will be on Monday 4/25 @ 3pm in room C211. Attention Students: The Great Race Has Begun!!!!

As the start of Spring Quarter approaches, we will be having elections of new board members at the Business Leadership Club. Below is a general outline of the responsibilities and duties of the positions. Please e-mail Mark at: bccbusinessclub2@hotmail.com if you are interested or have questions.

Club Positions

President: This person should be someone who will be attending BCC next year. The President should be comfortable with leading meetings, organizing events, networking and working through student government (ASG), club advisors, business advisors (Janice Grayson) and new potential speakers for events. This person should be dedicated to the club and on-time to events. The President also must help Judith Paquett with the coffee maker before events.

Vice-President: This person should be comfortable doing all of the above and help the President as much as possible. The Vice and the President should work together and make a solid team. If a monthly club caucus is held, any member on the cabinet can attend. The Vice-President can help schedule and request rooms for events and contribute to the club as much as possible.

Treasurer: This person can prepare funding requests and work directly with student government to get money for club events. The treasurer will have to attend ASG government meetings to request for funding and he/she should be good at estimating costs for club events. If ASG cannot fund events the Treasurer can collect money from club members to hold an event (Ex: $5 per person for a social event)

Webmaster: This person should be skilled on the internet and be able to upodate our website frequently with news and events.

Photographer: This person can work with the webmaster and take pictures at events.Secretary: This person should be organized and responsible. The secretary can take notes during meetings and events and work with the webmaster (if they aren't already a webmaster) to post news on our website.

Advertising Specialist: This person will work iwith the CAB department of ASG to design and come up with new ideas to create posters to help attract people to BLC events. The advertising specialist can also work with JibSheet to advertise the club and upcoming events.

OTHER POSSIBILITIES FOR CABINET POSITIONS

Chef: This person can create feasts for the club every Monday at 3:00! Chef also must bake cookies and brownies for club events. Extra-special feasts will be made when BCC BLC alumni come back to visit!

Issaquah Costco & Headquarter Trip

On March 4th, BCC students had the prviledge and opportunity to go on a tour of the Issaquah Costco and its corporate headquarters. We met all sorts of employees and staff, ranging from the store personnel level, to management, to even corporate assistant vice presidents!

We learned a lot on Costco's target market and its selling strategy on merchandise. We also heard from a panel of speakers from corporate headquarters giving their accounts of their job position at Costco and how they arrived there. BCC graduates come for a special event!

On February 17, four Business Transfer alumni returned to BCC to share the secrets of their success with BCC students. For two hours, Brooke, Yunice, Carl and Matt mingled and talked with students. They discussed their experiences at their four-year institutions, what to expect in the classes (lots of group projects), the importance of networking, the importance of joining clubs and associations. They talked about recruiting and how they got their jobs.

Matt was a statistics tutor while at BCC.
Bachelors in Business Administration with concentration in Finance expected '05, University of Washington, Bothell.
Consistently on the Dean's List at UW Bothell, Matt is scheduled to graduate in June 05. Matt has already secured a job as a consultant for a firm which specializes in risk assessment and internal auditing.

Carl was a statistics tutor while at BCC and worked as an intern for the Northwest Entrepreneur's Network.
BA in Business Administration, Finance and Management '04, Seattle University.
Carl graduated cum laude from Seattle U and garnered many honors including being one of 7 Seattle U. and 800 students nationally selected for the RISE national symposium on investing. He was also a Student Advisor. Carl is currently the lead financial analyst in the customer service department (the second largest budget) of Puget Sound Energy and is working on his Black Belt in Six Sigma.

Brooke worked on an internship at Expedia arranged by BCC.
Masters in Accounting, '04 University of Washington, Seattle.
Brooke completed her Masters in Accounting in four instead of the usual five years. While at the UW she received the WA Promise Scholarship and the Lorig Foundation Scholarship. She was on the Business School Deans List. Brooke now works as an auditor at Deloitte & Touche and is completing the requirements of her CPA.

BA in Accounting '03, Seattle University.
While at Seattle U, Yunice received the Peach Foundation Scholarship, G. Robert Truex Scholarship, a Seattle University Grant, Accounting Associates Fund Seattle University Scholarship, and the Associated Students of Seattle University Service Award. Since graduating from Seattle U., Yunice worked as the controller of an investment company and was recruited to be finance manager at WDS Global, a wireless company headquartered in London, England.

Sharon Linton came to Bellevue Community College February 7th to talk to us about her own personal business ventures and give us some great advice. A marketing major with an MBA from Seattle University, she has worked her way through various areas in business such as sales, advertising, and her current position as a communications director in Bellevue's Meydenbauer Center.

Her career began in sales, as a door-to-door salesperson for Monvoe selling calculators. She then moved onto, GMA conducting customer surveys with clients. Then, she took a position at McDonalds promoting their advertisements. In addition, she was a quality assurance representative for Group Health before moving on to the Meydenbauer.

Hey guys~ sorry it took so long for me to post. So our 3rd BLC meeting took place on Monday January 31st. We talked mostly on what catagories we were interested in for next quarter's theme. One of the top votes was international business so we will try and get a speaker who is related to that area. Also, our current BLC president Mark will be leaving BCC by Fall quarter. This means the race is on for a new Business Leadership Club president~! Anyone can try out for the position, the only "requirement" is that you have been a member of BLC for some time. Ed Harris Comes to BCC!!!!

Ed Harris came to BCC on Wed. Jan., 19th, and spoke to the Business club on many of the experiences he deals with as the CFO of Vulcan, Inc. The session was held in C120 with over 50 students, staff, and faculty attending. Mr. Harris spoke on many aspects his career such as: Razor Capital, managing a portfolio for none other than "Paul Allen," and being the former CFO of many other companies. Hello everyone this is Rae from BLC. I guess I am going to be writing about what goes on during the meetings every week. This week BLC memebers signed a Thank-you card for Ed Harris. We also recieved more news on the New York trip that will be happening around March 30th. Mike and Professor Palm are basically running the show for the trip. The trip will probably last about three days and we will be touring New York City's major financial areas. There is limited seating (about 25 people) so if you are intrested talk to Mike or Professor Palm. BLC members get priority seating and may have priority on funding if the school will fund the trip.
Mark (BLC president) also suggested voting on new topics/speakers for this quarter. If you have any suggestions or comments on what catagory you would be interested in this quarter (advertising, marketing, e-commerce, etc.) then write it in the comments or email Mark (bccbusinessclub2@hotmail.com).

Sharon Linton will be coming to BCC on February 7th 3:00 PM in either room c120 or c130. She is the communications manager at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue and managed some amazing projects. Congratulations to the Business Club's first meeting on Monday Jan. 10th. Over 20 people attended the kickoff meeting held in room C120. There were both new and returning faces at the meeting. Jibsheet, the weekly newsletter for BCC was also there to cover, and has published an article in the January 19th, 2005 issue. Connect to Your Future Conference -- Hosted by BCC Nov. 2, 2004

This event was hosted at BCC on November 2nd in conjuction with Boeing and Northeast TechPrep Consortium. The mission was to provide "Provide industry and education speakers, panels, and break-out sessions and booths to inform, inspire and interact with students." (http://http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/business/conference/)

There were 8 panels held with a wide range of topics from: Business to Computer Science and Biotechnology. Over 1,600 students attended the panels with a great success! Please visit the link to see the all the different panels and for more information. Below are pictures taken from the Conference.
